Microgrids – Out with the New and In with the Old

Speaker: Alex Schmidt, HDR

Microgrids are one of the many new buzzwords as a side effect of electrification and resilience. The concepts of microgrids are not a new technology. As overnight communities arise, whether it be from military action, mining operations, etc., these types of organized efforts would be considered simple microgrids. However, the microgrids in the news today are more complex, resilient, and most importantly, “green”. This presentation will discuss some of the applications the industry is seeing today with microgrids. It will also discuss how microgrids increase resiliency for the community and the entire electrical grid. Finally, it will be explained why microgrids and green energy go together.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the new buzz around microgrids.
  • Learn about current applications of the technology.
  • Discover what future possibilities may be implemented and when.

Alex Schmidt, PE is a Distribution Electrical Engineer for HDR. He designs photovoltaics, electric vehicle supply equipment, MV/LV distribution, generation, and microgrids. He’s completed several microgrid efforts for the Department of Defense, where resiliency and green initiatives are a big focus. He has a breadth of knowledge in the power industry, which allows him to take many different points of view on microgrid technology.
