Entering Firm: CBS Squared Inc.
Client: Wisconsin Department of Transportation

The City of Mosinee faced a difficult situation – traffic flow through their downtown had decreased as volume rose and the pavement deteriorated. Large trucks using the area could barely turn through the tight urban corridor. Additionally, historic buildings and business interests constrained the space in which to make changes.

CBS Squared immediately began modeling to find the biggest pressure points. A vast majority of accidents occurred at the same spot, so the team focused there. By improving the road foundation, a safer orientation was designed. A curb bump out was designed in front of a local brewery to allow for a safe turning radius for large trucks, also improving safety.

Construction management proved to be more complicated than expected. The design team worked hard to stage construction and designated ample detour routes. By providing a wide range of routes, construction bidding was significantly lower than expected and the road stayed open throughout.

The newly redesigned WIS 153 features modern bike and pedestrian accommodations in the heart of downtown. Drivers experience smoother travel times and surfaces as well as a safer commute, inviting more visitors to experience the charming city.
