Entering Firm: Jewell Associates Engineers Inc.
Client: Iowa County Highway Department
The Iowa County Highway Department set out to transform CTH T, the county’s largest highway improvement project in more than 40 years. The project aimed to enhance safety, mobility, and community connectivity by improving the roadway and adding a multi-use trail to connect locals to towns, trails, and parks.
Engineers strengthened regional connections through a safer roadway and shared-use trail.
Jewell Associates Engineers guided every phase of the project, from surveying, roadway design, and hydraulic modeling to real estate coordination and on-site construction inspection. Collaboration with the County, Wisconsin DNR, Corps of Engineers, FEMA, zoning authorities, and local stakeholders ensured a well-coordinated and environmentally responsible design.
The team did a comprehensive redesign of the deteriorated roadway. Pavement and base layers were reconstructed using new subbase and geogrid stabilization to address weak soils. Steep grades and sharp hills were reshaped to improve sight distance, intersections were reevaluated for visibility and safety, and drainage systems were upgraded to improve stormwater flow. Along the new trail, engineers designed curb, gutter, storm sewer improvements, and enhanced ditch capacity to support both immediate and long-term erosion control.
The result is a safer, more resilient corridor that strengthens regional connections and that will support Iowa County and its communities for decades.
