The Windsor Road Bridge Project

The Windsor Road Bridge over the Yahara River exemplifies the power of strategic planning and collaboration in infrastructure development. Situated near the boundary between the Villages of DeForest and Windsor, this project was a crucial component of a broader initiative to enhance local transportation networks.

Sponsored by the Village of Windsor and funded through the federally supported Local Bridge Program, the project required meticulous coordination with the Village of DeForest, which was simultaneously reconstructing adjacent roadway segments.

Collaboration, Coordination, and Improvement

Ayres played a pivotal role in the Windsor Road Bridge project, handling initial design options, final design, and bid documents. The project involved replacing a deficient bridge and transforming the roadway from a rural to an urban cross section. This transformation included wider lanes, shoulders, curb and gutter, and a 10-foot-wide multiuse path, significantly improving safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. The success of Windsor Road hinged on effective communication and collaboration. Ayres worked closely with ECS Midwest, which conducted subsurface investigations, and Dane County Title Company, responsible for title searches. Regular meetings and detailed planning sessions were essential to address environmental impacts, utility coordination, and regulatory compliance. This proactive approach helped prevent delays and ensured a smooth construction process.

Community Engagement

Engaging with the community was a critical component of the project. A joint public involvement meeting was held to inform residents about the bridge and roadway projects and to gather feedback. This involvement allowed for adjustments to be made based on community input, fostering a sense of ownership and support among residents.

The project not only improved infrastructure but also promoted a more active and connected community by providing safe routes for outdoor activities.

Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship

The project required extensive environmental coordination to minimize impacts on properties with Section 4(f) and Section 6(f) interests. Ayres demonstrated a commitment to environmental stewardship by engaging with seven utility interests within the project area. This involved regular communication and planning to address potential conflicts and develop strategies to mitigate them.

The Windsor Road Bridge exemplifies the benefits of thorough planning, effective communication, and collaboration in achieving infrastructure development goals. By transforming the roadway and enhancing community connectivity, the project has created a safer, more accessible, and vibrant environment for residents.
