Entering Firm: EXP
Client: Milwaukee County Parks
In Milwaukee’s Washington Park, two pedestrian bridges from 1938 had deteriorated beyond repair. These historic bridges were a park centerpiece and the client wanted to restore them while honoring their historic identity.
Engineers honored the historic character while meeting modern safety and accessibility needs.
EXP performed extensive inspections and research to determine the best way to approach the task. Designing historically sensitive yet fully modern structures required extensive collaboration among community stakeholders and the client. Advanced computer-based analysis made it possible to preserve these traditional design characteristics while meeting modern demands.
The new bridges reflect the early-20th-century form and function of their predecessors through a concrete rigid-frame structural system that integrates architectural expression directly into the structure. The bridges now support full-sized maintenance vehicles, provide ADA-compliant railings and pathways, and maintain the clearance needed for seasonal recreation such as boating and ice skating. Improvements to paths, lighting, and surrounding vegetation further enhance visibility and safety, while the exterior design replicates the stone masonry aesthetic of the original bridges.
The final bridges blend cultural stewardship with long-term durability, sustainability and accessibility. By blending engineering innovation with cultural sensitivity and public engagement, the project preserves the spirit of Washington Park and delivers infrastructure that will serve the community for generations.
