Managing Risk in Design Firms: Business Insurance 101

Speakers: Allison Schneider and Izzy Verdugo, Holmes Murphy

Risk is an unavoidable part of working in architecture, engineering, and construction—but understanding it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. This foundational session demystifies how risk shows up in AEC firms and why it matters to both business owners and emerging professionals. Attendees will explore the differences between firm-level liability and the personal liability tied to professional licensure, along with how insurance funds for these risks. The session also breaks down how claims actually arise—from contract language and project delivery methods to everyday project decisions—and what typically triggers them. Finally, we’ll discuss practical, real-world steps firms and individuals can take to mitigate risk, strengthen their risk management culture, and protect their careers and businesses as they grow.

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand what risk means in the context of a design firm.
  • Learn what your role is within your firm to minimize risk.
  • Review some examples of claims and the real world impacts of that liability.

This session is open to anyone seeking growth, learning and connection—especially those in the first third of their careers. While in-person attendance is strongly encouraged, there is a Teams option as well. Select the correct ticket at registration to choose your method of attendance.
