2024 Engineering Excellence State Finalist

Entering Firm: CBS Squared Inc.
Client: Wisconsin Department of Transportation

Nestled in the scenic landscapes of Chippewa County, Cobban Bridge is a historic link in the region. However, the structure faced extensive deterioration, prompting its closure. The community, especially its agricultural users, pleaded for this link to be restored as quickly as possible.

CBS Squared navigated multiple challenges during construction oversight. They upheld a delicate balance between preserving the ecosystem—specifically protecting the endangered wood turtle—and ensuring efficient construction. Innovative collaboration with the Department of Natural Resources allowed in-stream work with regular underwater inspections, ensuring turtle safety.

Surpassing expectations, the bridge was completed three months ahead of schedule. The project's success set new standards for concrete placement in cold weather and strength data verification. These lessons will be applied to future transportation projects administered by the Department of Transportation.

The new Cobban Bridge significantly enhances accessibility, safety and connectivity for the community. All travelers have cut their travel times significantly by using the restored bridge. Additionally, agricultural users have gained major efficiencies, reducing costs and boosting productivity.

The structure is a symbol of community heritage and engineering excellence, offering a brighter and more connected future.
