Entering Firm: GRAEF
Client: Friends of Lapham Peak Unit - Kettle Moraine State Forest
Lapham Peak Unit in Kettle Moraine State Forest was a beautiful piece of land with poor accommodations. Through a strong partnership between GRAEF, the client, and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the team delivered a striking new facility that enhances visitor experiences and strengthens one of Wisconsin’s most popular recreation destinations.
Engineers created a new central gathering point for Lapham Peak visitors, increasing usage at a beautiful natural area.
The GRAEF engineering team implemented creative solutions that improved parkwide systems. Sustainability guided key design decisions, including high-efficiency HVAC systems, a rooftop solar array, and infrastructure upgrades that reduce energy use and improve long-term operations.
The new Lodge is more than three times larger than the former structure, offering modern amenities, expanded space for events and educational programming, and improved support for year-round recreation. Funded primarily through private donations, the project also leveraged local support, state and federal grants, and tourism funding. Public engagement and statewide recognition underscored the project’s success, highlighted by a well-attended Grand Opening featuring state leadership and extensive media coverage.
The project’s success has inspired other groups across Wisconsin and established a model for efficient, community-driven public project delivery. Lapham Lodge stands as a testament to how a small group of committed volunteers can create meaningful, lasting change.
