Entering Firm: Ayres Associates
Client: City of Racine

The City of Racine enlisted Ayres Associates’ engineering expertise to tackle the intricate task of replacing the iconic West 6th Street Bridge, a cherished local landmark. Facing the challenge of preserving historical charm while modernizing the 1928 structure, the team embraced the opportunity to blend tradition with innovation.

Ayres designed a two-span concrete bridge design that harmonized with local aesthetics, mirroring the original structure’s terra cotta and tile mosaic treatments. To ensure precision in the new structure's design, high-definition scanning captured the existing bridge's unique features and surrounding elements, minimizing costs. The new structure features sidewalks and on-road bicycle accommodations, addressing safety and accessibility concerns.

Public involvement played a crucial role in the project, considering the bridge's prominent location. The team delivered a wide range of services, like survey work and environmental documentation, which contributed to the project’s success. They also collaborated with a wide range of community members to deliver a unique design.

The result is a harmonious blend of historic preservation, community engagement and modern infrastructure improvements.
